It is a non-invasive overnight test that monitors your sleep to check for disorders such as sleep apnoea.

What is a Home Sleep Study

A home sleep study is a simple, non-invasive overnight test that checks for sleep disorders like sleep apnoea. You’ll sleep at home using a compact device and sensors that record key vital signs such as breathing, heart rate, oxygen levels, snoring, and body movements.

The next day, the data is downloaded and analysed by one of our expert Sleep Specialists for reporting.

Home studies focus on the most important measurements to detect conditions like obstructive sleep apnoea — with the advantage of sleeping in your own bed. They are usually more comfortable, affordable, and provide results that better reflect your normal sleep.

A home sleep study is a fast, accurate and easy way to find out if your sleep is being affected by issues like sleep apnoea.

What’s Involved in a Home Sleep Study

You’ll sleep at home using a compact recording device and sensors that track key vital signs while you rest. The device will record things like your breathing patterns, heart rate, oxygen levels, snoring and body movements through the night. The next day, the data is downloaded and complied for interpretation and reporting by a qualified Sleep Medicine Physician.

Within days, your GP and our Sleep Clinicians will receive the specialist report. Based on the results, we’ll recommend the most appropriate CPAP machine, mask, and accessories to support your therapy needs.

We offer a carefully selected range of leading CPAP products for purchase — including the latest technology designed for comfort, ease of use, and effective treatment of sleep apnoea.

Once you’ve selected your equipment, our team will configure, fit, and set up your CPAP machine specifically for you, ensuring everything is ready for a smooth start.
You’ll leave feeling confident, supported, and ready to experience the benefits of better sleep from your very first night.

Who Might Need a Home Sleep Study?

If you have any of these signs, symptoms, or risk factors:

Chronic Snoring
Especially if your partner says your snoring is disruptive or you stop breathing (gasp or choke) during sleep. Persistent snoring is a common sign of obstructive sleep apnoea.

Daytime Sleepiness
Feeling very tired, groggy or nodding off during the day, even after what should be a full night’s sleep. Waking up unrefreshed, with morning headaches or a dry mouth, can also be a red flag.

Interrupted Sleep
Difficulty staying asleep, frequent awakenings through the night, or insomnia that doesn’t have an obvious cause. Poor quality sleep may indicate an underlying sleep disorder.

High Blood Pressure or Health Conditions
Conditions like hypertension, type 2 diabetes, obesity, or even depression are frequently linked with sleep apnoea. Treating the sleep problem can often improve these related conditions.

Daytime Mood and Focus Problems
Irritability, depression, trouble concentrating or memory issues can all result from chronically poor sleep.

Pre-Surgery or Occupational Need
Sometimes a sleep study is recommended before major surgery or for certain professions (for example, truck drivers) to ensure conditions like sleep apnoea are identified and managed.

If you recognise these symptoms in yourself or a loved one, contact your GP - a home sleep study can be an important first step in diagnosing the issue and getting effective treatment.

How Our Home Sleep Study Process Works

We make home sleep testing simple, supportive, and convenient, with therapy in mind.

Here’s how the process works:

1. Referral and Booking

Speak with your GP about your sleep concerns. If a sleep study is appropriate, your doctor will provide you with an Airway Care referral (required for Medicare). You can also downloaded the referral from our website and give it to your GP.

If you meet the medicare and clinical criteria for a Home Sleep Study, you can then go ahead and book your appointment with us online to start your Home Sleep Study.

2. Equipment Setup and Guidance

On the day of your study, we arrive into our clinic where we setup the testing equipment. Setup includes small, non-invasive sensors carefully attached to you. Our friendly team ensures you feel fully comfortable for your sleep study.

You’ll be guided through every step, with plenty of time to ask questions. Once everything is ready, you’ll return home wearing the equipment. Simply sleep as you normally would — we’ll take care of the rest.

3. How to Prepare

  • Stick to your usual routine

Follow your normal evening habits — including tea, coffee, or a small amount of alcohol if you usually have them. Maintaining your regular bedtime routine in the days leading up to your sleep study helps ensure more accurate results.

  • Take your usual medications

Please continue any prescribed medications unless your doctor has advised otherwise.

  • Shower and prepare your skin

On the evening of your sleep study, have a shower, thoroughly wash and dry your hair, and remove any makeup. Clean skin and hair (without oils or residues) help the monitoring sensors stay in place and capture clearer readings.

  • Avoid hair products and moisturisers

Do not use hair conditioner, hair styling products, moisturisers, or heavy skin creams before your sleep study.

  • Remove wigs, hairpieces, or extensions

If you wear a hairpiece or extensions, these will need to be removed prior to the setup, as sensors will be attached to your scalp.

  • Plan for the weather

If rain is forecast, bring an umbrella or raincoat. It’s important to protect the medical equipment from getting wet or damaged.

  • Wear appropriate sleepwear

Bring loose-fitting, comfortable sleepwear with you. Tops should either be button-up, zippered, or have a wide, stretchy neckline to allow access to your chest for the placement of heart monitoring sensors (ECG leads).

  • Important

Once your sleep study equipment is set up, you will not be able to remove or change your clothing without disrupting the sensors.

For your comfort, we recommend wearing loose shorts, pants, or a lightweight T-shirt that you’ll be comfortable sleeping in — and travelling home in if needed.

    4. Sleep Comfortably at Home

Simply sleep in your own bed, following your normal routine while wearing the monitoring device.

It will quietly collect important data on your breathing, oxygen levels, heart rate, movements, and more — giving a clear picture of your typical sleep.

    5. Morning Equipment Return

In the morning, you’ll easily remove the sensors and return the equipment to our clinic before 10am.

Our team will check the device and ensure all data has been recorded correctly.
There’s no need to worry — the process is simple and hassle-free.

    6. Expert Analysis

Once your results are ready (usually within a week), we’ll arrange a follow-up consultation.

We’ll explain the findings and guide you through recommended therapy and range of CPAP machines for purchase – helping you breathe better and live better.

    7. Results Review and Next Steps

Your overnight data is reviewed by an independent specialist sleep physician. The data is carefully analysed with respect to your sleep patterns, breathing, oxygen levels, and more. A detailed medical report is prepare and sent to both your GP and Airway Care.
