Home Sleep Studies
Understand your sleep, from the comfort of your own bed
Concerned about snoring, interrupted sleep or feeling sleepy during the day? Airway Care helps you arrange a home sleep study, with equipment fitting and a specialist-interpreted report to support the next conversation with your doctor.
Start with a referral, or contact our team if you need help understanding the booking process.
What is a home sleep study?
A home sleep study is an overnight medical test performed while you sleep at home. Sensors connected to a portable recorder collect information about your breathing, oxygen levels, heart activity and movement.
The recording helps a clinician investigate whether a sleep-related breathing problem may be affecting you. It is different from a sleep score on a smartwatch: it forms part of a medical assessment, alongside your symptoms and health history. Your doctor helps determine which type of study is appropriate.
When should you ask your doctor about sleep apnoea?
Talk with your GP if you or someone close to you has noticed:
- Loud or persistent snoring.
- Pauses in your breathing during sleep.
- Waking with a choking or gasping sensation.
- Daytime sleepiness or regularly waking unrefreshed.
These symptoms deserve assessment, but they do not confirm a diagnosis by themselves. Your doctor can consider other possible causes and whether a sleep study is needed.
Your home sleep study, step by step

1. Arrange your referral and booking
Speak with your GP or treating specialist and bring the completed sleep study referral form. Our team will confirm the paperwork and help you arrange a suitable appointment.

2. Attend your equipment fitting
At your appointment, a Sleep Health Clinician explains the study, attaches the small non-invasive sensors and configures the recorder. You’ll receive clear instructions for comfortable, reliable overnight recording at home.
Preparing for your appointment
Follow the instructions provided for your booking. On the day of your fitting:
- Bring your referral and arrive 15 minutes early. Allow approximately 30–45 minutes for your appointment.
- Keep to your normal routine, including eating and drinking as usual.
- Take your usual prescribed medicines unless your doctor has advised otherwise.
- Shower beforehand and arrive with clean, dry skin and hair. Avoid makeup, moisturiser and hair products where sensors will be attached.
- Wear or bring loose-fitting, comfortable sleepwear. Once the equipment is fitted, changing clothes may disturb the sensors.
- Arrange to drive or be driven home, as the fitted equipment is not suitable for travel on public transport.
If any personalised instructions differ from this guidance, follow the directions provided by your Airway Care team or treating clinician.

3. Sleep at home
Return home with the equipment and follow the instructions provided for your study. The recorder collects information while you sleep. Keep the equipment dry and follow the guidance on handling the sensors.

4. Return the equipment
Return the recorder and sensors the following morning at the time agreed with our team. Let us know about any equipment problems or anything unusual about the night.

5. Receive your report and discuss the next steps
Your recording is analysed and reviewed by a qualified sleep medicine specialist, with a report sent to your referring doctor.
Discuss the findings and treatment options with your doctor before starting therapy. If CPAP is recommended, Airway Care can help with CPAP equipment, mask fitting and support.
Home sleep study questions
Is a home sleep study right for everyone?
No. Your health history and the sleep problem being investigated affect which test is suitable. Some people need an attended sleep-laboratory study or another form of assessment.
Is a home sleep study covered by Medicare?
Medicare benefits may be available when the relevant referral and clinical requirements are met. A referral alone does not guarantee eligibility or a no-cost appointment. Ask our team to explain eligibility and any charges before booking.
What if the recording is incomplete?
Tell our team about any problems with the equipment or sensors. An inconclusive recording may require further testing; the appropriate next step depends on the clinical review.
What if I already use CPAP?
Tell your referring doctor and our team before booking. Do not assume you should stop using prescribed therapy for the test. If you are looking for help with your current equipment, visit our CPAP therapy page.
